polytrope cm assistant/support: single-user setup

Using CM Assistant on a single computer

If CM Assistant is going to be used on one computer only, you should place the CM Assistant folder on this computer's hard disk. Open CM Assistant, go to Options, find the sharing page there, and turn multi-user access OFF. This will prevent anyone else on the network from seeing CM Assistant in their FileMaker Pro "hosts" dialog. It is also a good idea to disable operating-system file sharing on this computer, so that the copy of CM Assistant stored on your computer's hard disk cannot be opened by a user at another computer. Don't forget to establish a backup routine for your files.

Even if you are using CM Assistant in single-user mode, you should not place the files on a network file server (e.g. a Novell Netware server or Windows NT server). It might work for you, it might even work for you for a good long while. But if you're interested in the safety of your data, it's a bad idea.
